My Week in Gaming 2014-08-08

Hello everybody,

So this week I still did not get any painting done but I did get a lot of gaming in.

Every year for the August long weekend my family does a family reunion camping trip where many games are played. To give you a sense of scope there was 4 RV's and 8 tents full of people. That meant that there was always a game of some sort on the go from basic card games to Liar's Dice to Betrayal at House on the Hill. Two of my cousins even bought a box of M15 boosters for Magic so we could do a draft tournament over the weekend.

For the draft tournament it was a best of 3 for each round and I was eliminated in the second round winning my first round 2-0 and the second ending 1-2. The deck I used was a blue/black deck that turned out to be a one trick pony, draw until I got In Garuk's Wake and the wipe their side of the board and just trounce them after that. When it worked it worked well, but a creature that when it died created a bunch of 1/1 Islandwalks I just could not handle.

For House on the Hill, we had all six characters in play and I was using the Jock. The haunt we got affected the character with the highest might (me) and led the jock on the hunt for a human sacrifice. Lucky for me the doctor was not too far and standing next to the mystic elevator. One quick stab and elevator ride later and I won the game.

My wife and I played a couple games of Seasons which is one of her favourites, she is good at it and she knows it. she even promised to give Gloom a try this weekend after she heard/watched it be played.

My brother also brought out The Resistance and Avalon and as such there was only about 20-30 games of that played, always fun and always a crowd favourite.

I have also had some time to get in a bunch of games of LoL and have gotten my summoner up to lvl 10 which is nice, more masteries and runes for me to work with.

My Week in Gaming 2014-07-31

So again it had been a very light week for gaming. But I do have lots planned for this weekend as I will be out of town at a family reunion camping trip that we do every year for the August long weekend.

With this there is lots of my family that plays games so there will be lots of games to get in on.

In the mean time I have managed to get up to level 8 in League of Legends. I have been really enjoying league but I all too often can't get the time to play until 11 at night which allows me down a bit.

My Week in Gaming 2014-07-25

This week I unfortunately have to report that I really got no gaming in. Which is turning into a bit of trend lately. I'm currently planning a big gaming day in a few weeks so I promise to have stuff to post soon.

One other reason that I don't have something to talk about gaming wise Is that last night my wife and I got new cell phones. In fact this post was written on my new Note 3.

My Week in Gaming 2014-07-18 (Kinda)

Hello everyone,

Sorry about the late post this week I recently started picking up more hours at my part-time job and we are approaching a deadline at my full-time one so I didn't have a lot of time on Friday and spent most of the weekend away from the computer.

Anyway I also don't have much gaming to report I spent all of my gaming time this week working on getting my LoL summoner up to level 7!

My Week in Gaming 2014-07-11

Hello everyone,

So again a slow week in gaming but I still got some time in.

Last night I got together with T and an old classmate of ours, R. We went out for dinner to catch up and then went back to my place to play some games. We got in two games of RDI in, R winning her first game ever and me taking the second one.

I also did get some time in on AC:R getting in a mission or two and also started playing League of Legends. Having played DOTA in Warcraft 3 I am very familiar with the game format but still learning the item and skill combos.

Games I Play: Red Dragon Inn

Players: 2+ (up to 4 per box)
Time: 30-45mins
Mechanics: Cards, Player Elimination

In Red Dragon Inn (RDI) you and your friends take on the role of a group of adventures ( or a ships crew and so on ) that has just completed your quest and is now pulling their chairs up to a table at the Red Dragon Inn to celebrate.

To win the game you have to be the last player standing (sitting?) at the table with gold. There are two ways to get removed from the table, the first is to run out of gold, the second is to pass out. For losing gold it is pretty straight forward tavern fair, spend it, gamble it, or have it stolen. For passing it each player gets a game board with a chain counting to 20 at one end you put a red fortitude counter at the other you put a clear alcohol counter, if these counters touch or pass each other you are done.

Each players turn is broken into 4 phases Draw, Play, Buy, Drink.

  • Draw - Draw until you have seven cards, enough said!
  • Play - Play one action card, make sure to say the name of the card not just the rules!
  • Buy - Buy a drink for a friend.
  • Drink - Flip the top card of your drink pile.

Now for the cards they come in a few different varieties, Action, Gambling, Sometimes, and Anytime.

  • Action - Played during your Play phase.
  • Gambling - Played during a round of gambling.
  • Sometimes - Lists conditions for when it can be played, typically a reactionary card, or Buy phase card.
  • Anytime - Can be played anytime!

As far as the gameplay goes it tends to be fast and fun, with humours card names and lots of personality in each of the decks used by the players it goes fast and eliminated players don't have to wait too long before the next round starts.

My Week in Gaming - 2014-07-04

So this week has not been a big one for playing games but rather good for my gaming storage.

My Gaming Space on
Deadzone Delivery Day
First some background, I have used bookcases for storing my figures for years but when my wife and I got our cats five years ago they started messing with them. So it went back and forth for a bit, me trying to keep my armies safe and the cats wondering what was so special about these miniature people. With that in mind when we moved 2 years ago I picked up a glass door bookcase for storing everything in. It worked great for a year and a half but when I got Deadzone I realized that it was no longer enough so I went and got a second glass cabinet (And I have to say that unloading the normal book cases to move them out 2 feet was a fun project in itself).

Gaming Cabinet Last Night
Well now a few weeks back I saw some spice racks while out shopping with my wife and my brain went into overdrive as the cabinets were great for storage but it was still hard to locate things as I hadn't really spread things out after getting the second cabinet. I was still only using about 60% of my space! So with a need for better storage and an idea I got a set of racks for my Deadzone figures. Now those racks work great for Deadzone models but what about unit based games like Kings of War? For that I thought about it and came up with a nice cheap option that I can refine later. Placing cut pieces of 2"x6" across the shelves which is large enough to fit a Endless Swarm of Zombies on a movement tray and leave enough room for a second unit in front of the board and 3 2x6x10's (Enough for my remaining shelves) only cost me $20, just as much as one set of the spice racks! I tried the Deadzone guys on one of the boards and while it is better than no board it is nowhere as nice as the spice racks so I need to pick up some more of those in the future.

Anyway to wrap up my rambling I spent last night sorting, organizing, fixing and counting my figures. So you will notice that my gamers challenge is updated on the right to reflect the current state of my forces and boy do I have some work to do!

I also had a chance to play a bit of Assassins' Creed before the end of the month nothing to spectacular but nice to get some more time in for that game.

My Week in Gaming 2014-06-27

Hello everyone,

So had my Thursday night gaming with my buddy M and what a blast! We got three games in, one of Magic, one of Deadzone and one of Destined Legends.

For Magic I played my almost creature less burn deck vs. M's tri-colour Red/Black/Green but the combo of Phylactery Lich and Creepy Doll proved to be too much and I was unable to stop it.

With Deadzone I played Rebs vs. M's Enforcers. For missions I drew Fight Another Day ( 1 point per kill and 1 for survive ) and I believe M drew one of the enforcer objective missions ( Yankee, or X-Ray as Zulu was the deployment card ). My tactic was to use LOTS of blaze away fire to try and keep his guys heads down while my Teraton rampaged through the Enforcers and the Zee grabbed items as he could. I have to say that it worked, but I don't know if it would work against M a second time as he just did not play very aggressively and by the time he realized that I was going for him I had 8 VPs ( 5 Survive, 1 Intel, and 2 kills ) vs. his 1 objective and dead Zee. At that point I killed one more Enforcer and ended the Round for the win!

My lesson learned from all of last nights game is that you need to be aggressive in Deadzone because if you don't your opponent will just run circles around you.

Lastly we played a game of Destined Legends which is a game that combines elements of Munchkin ( Player Level 10 being a win, level on monster kills ) and Magic ( Equipment and overall vibe ). The game was the result of a Kickstarter not that I was a backer but rather one of the artists was at this years Calgary Expo, Cari Corene and she had Kickstarter packs for sale so I did get the bonus stuff as well! Plus my copy is autographed by Cari! The game is a blast and has a great deal of potential I just need to get some more games in, and against more than just M.

Oh and I guess I should also say that it was M who won DL and won the night at 2 games to 1!

Well that was my night and basically my week in gaming!
